How to choose a sofa fabric: boucle, velvet, linen and more

What each popular upholstery fabric feels like, how it wears, and which suits families, pets and sunny rooms.

By Enzo · Updated

What is the best fabric for a sofa?

The best fabric is the one that matches how you live. Tightly woven fabrics resist wear and pets, soft textured fabrics feel cosy but show more, and light colors look airy but mark more easily.

Boucle

Boucle is a looped, textured fabric with a soft, cloud-like look. It hides everyday wear well but loops can snag on claws, so it suits homes without cats.

Velvet

Velvet is smooth and rich with a deep color. It is soft and comfortable, and the pile can show pressure marks that you brush out. Choose a performance velvet if the sofa will be used every day.

Linen and linen blends

Linen is breathable and cool, which suits warm rooms. It creases naturally, and blends with cotton or polyester wear better than pure linen.

Which fabric is best with children or pets?

Pick a tightly woven fabric in a mid-tone or patterned color. Dark and mid-tones hide marks better than white or cream, and tight weaves are harder for claws to catch.
